DC comic book heroes Superman and Batman?

dc comic books
MJ asked:

I know these characters aren't real but just to pretend for just one moment When all those people died in The Dark Night where was superman to save them. I know superman and batman are in two different cities obviously but since superman has super hearing shouldn't he hear these people screaming and crying for help. To pick up where batman left off. Superman could save people in other countries as well but he can't save someone next door. Batman is human he has no special powers he's more like a bounty hunter, so what's Supermans excuse.

This is just a thought that came up when I went to see Batman yesterday and I was watching the superman returns movie today. I know its a weird question two differ story lines and but same DC universive look at the justice league. what's your opinion on this? Is it just me?
