Why are comic books not as popular in the UK as in other countries such as the US or Japan?

I'm from England and enjoy reading comic books and although there is a comic book community it is not as big as in the US were there are stores in every town and it is quite hard to get hold of them here and little kids dont seem to read them that much? Does anyone know why this is?
